Croatian Defender Josko Gvardiol Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol has spoken out for the first time after being embarrassed by Lionel Messi at FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Josko Gvardiol at the press conference said that playing alongside Lionel Messi is the best thing that has ever happened to him in his football career despite his team Croatia crashing out of the World Cup with a 3-0 defeats the South American side.
Argentina easily defeated Croatia in the Semi-Finals at Lusail Stadium, with Messi scoring from the penalty spot, assisted by Julian Alvarez, who also had a fantastic game that night, scoring two goals to destroy the Vatreni team.
Josko’s embarrassment came with Argentina’s third goal, in which Messi made an incredible run down the flank before beating him with a clever fake step and finding Alvarez with a delightful cutback.
However, when asked about his experience playing Messi, Josko Gvardiol gave an honest response, emphasising that Messi is a completely different player adding that he will be able to share his story with children how excited he was to play with Leo for the first time.
“It was a nice experience even though I played against him in the club last season. He is a completely different type of player in the club and in the national team. I am pleased to have had this chance to play against him even though we lost the game.
“It’s a great experience, and one day I’ll tell my kids that I played against the best player in history and hopefully next time we would manage to win that game.” — Josko Gvardiol said at the press.
The 20-year-old RB Leipzig full back is undoubtedly one of the best defenders at the ongoing Qatar World Cup despite Messi’s embarrassment towards him with elites clubs likes Manchester City and Tottenham ready to spend big money on him.
Meanwhile, Croatia will face Morocco in the third-place play-off on Saturday December 17 at 3pm GMT at Khalifa International Stadium, with Josko aiming for his team to finish third.
Argentina will face France in the final game on Sunday December 18 to determine which team will take home the ultimate cup at the tournament’s final chapter.
