Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General’s Department to discontinue the criminal case involving Prince Aboagye, an NDC branch organiser from Agona West.

In a statement addressing the matter, Dr. Bawumia said he did not file a complaint against Prince Aboagye and had not authorised or requested any legal action over social media posts and comments allegedly made about him.

According to Dr. Bawumia, while he is aware of the ongoing case, he has never instructed any state institution to prosecute individuals for insulting or criticising him.

He therefore appealed to the relevant authorities to review the matter and discontinue the prosecution.

Why Was Prince Aboagye Arrested?

Prince Aboagye, popularly known as Atutulagh, was arrested after a video circulated on social media on July 18, 2026, in which he allegedly made offensive remarks and published false claims about Dr. Bawumia on TikTok.

According to court proceedings, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the 38-year-old on July 19, 2026, after the video gained public attention.

During investigations, Prince Aboagye reportedly admitted making the statements but acknowledged that the allegations contained in the video were false.

He was subsequently charged with offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and publication of false news, in accordance with Ghanaian law.

During the court hearing, the prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Seth Frimpong, argued that the publication was capable of provoking a breach of the peace, according to Graphic Online.

Court Grants Prince Aboagye Bail

Following his appearance before the court, Prince Aboagye was granted bail on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in the sum of GH¢20,000 with three sureties, one of whom must justify the bond with landed property.

Dr. Bawumia Speaks On Prince Aboagye’s Case

Dr. Bawumia’s call for the discontinuation of the case has since generated widespread discussion on social media and across the political landscape.

While some Ghanaians have praised his position as a gesture of tolerance and reconciliation, others believe the legal process should be allowed to take its course regardless of the complainant’s position.

The development has reignited conversations about freedom of expression, responsible use of social media, and the role of public officials in cases involving alleged defamatory or offensive online content.
