Shawn Carter popularly known as Jay-Z has become the most-nominated artist in the history of the Grammy Awards after receiving his 83rd Grammy nomination on Tuesday.
American rapper Shawn Carter, popularly known as Jay-Z, has revealed that growing up was difficult for him and his family.
Jay-Z, a well-known musician and entrepreneur around the world, shared his awkward life story in which his biological father, Adniz Reevis, abandoned him when he was 11 years old.
According to him, when his father abandoned him and his three siblings, it was his mother Gloria Carter who raised all four children by herself.
He emphasized that his mother never gave up on them and used to work as a clerk in an investment institution while also offering part-time work as a Security Guard to care for all four children.
“I didn’t have it easy growing up. My dad abandoned my family when I was age 11, leaving my mum to raise 4 kids on her own in Brooklyn, New York. Mama held it down as a clerk at an investment firm. Sometimes, she’d take up part-time job as a security guard just to provide for us.
“Once I became successful as a rapper & entrepreneur, I retired my mama. At some point mama got bored not working. In 2003, she became the president of my foundation, the Shawn Carter Foundation.” – JAY-Z
The pain and sorrows endured by the struggled rapper Jay-Z were expressed in lyrics in his song “Adnis” from his album titled “4:44,” where he addressed his Father despite reconciling in 2003 and later dying of liver failure.
Jay-Z has three brothers and two sisters. Michelle Carter Ajax Andrea Carter Gloria, his mother, is a pathologist with a doctorate from MCP Hehnemann College of Medicine.
