Harris later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Australia and a diploma in edication from Claremont Teachers Institute (now Edith Cowan University). Harris attended Bassendean State School in Subiaco and Perth Modern School.
His oil self-portrait was one of 80 paintings (out of 200 submitted) approved for exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales as part of the 1947 Archibald Prize. It was created when he was only 16 years and a student at Perth modern School
For the 1948 Archibald Prize he drew a portrait of Sir James Mitchell, then Lieutenant Governor of Western Australia. For landscape May Morning, Guilford won the 1949 Claude Hotchin Award for Oil Painting.
