Tahesha Biography
Tahesha Leila Way also known as Tahesha Wright is an American politician who is affiliated with the Democratic Party. She has held a number of important roles in New Jersey’s administration, including the third Lieutenant Governor and the 34th Secretary of State. She also served on the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders as a Freeholder Director.
Tahesha Way was raised in The Bronx and attended Brown University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in English and American literature. She went on to earn a law degree from the University of Virginia.

Her professional background includes work as a law clerk, a television producer for Court TV, and a literature professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She also worked as an attorney for a Totowa legal firm.
Way was admitted to the state bar in 1998, marking a watershed moment in her legal career. Her political career began in 2006, when she became a member of the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Way was appointed Secretary of State of New Jersey in December 2017, following the election of Governor Phil Murphy, and officially took office on February 26, 2018.
On September 7, 2023, Murphy announced that he had chosen Way to be the new Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey, filling the vacancy left by Sheila Oliver’s death. The next day, Way was sworn in to this position, cementing her place in New Jersey politics.
“Tahesha has set a new and high standard for defending democracy,” Mr. Murphy said as he announced her appointment.
“Tahesha has demonstrated that she can handle the single most important responsibility of any lieutenant governor,” Mr. Murphy added, “and that is to step in to serve.”
