Yaw Sarpong, a Ghanaian prolific musician reportedly passed away at aged 66 causing a huge vacuum in the Ghanaian gospel music fraternity.
According to reports by MyJoyonline.com, the leader of the Asomafo Band died on Tuesday, January 20, 2025, in Emena Hospital in Kumasi after battling a prolonged stroke sickness.
Details surrounding his true cause of death have not been made public, since his devastated family and doctors are yet to reveal what killed him.
Yaw Sarpong’s death comes barely a month after tge passing of Maame Tiwa, a key member of Yaw Sarpong’s Asomafo music group.
During his time, Yaw Sarpong was known for his popular songs like ‘Wo Haw Ne Sen’, Yen Nka Nkyere Yen Agya among others.
He had been on music hiatus due to his illness forcing him to step back on his career to focus on treatment and recovery.
Born in 1960, Yaw Sarpong was regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Ghanaian gospel music industry. He founded the ‘Asomafo Band’ group in 1990 with Liberian natives following his travel to Liberia.
The group which is known for its string lyrical content and discipline musical style rooted in Christine doctrine has shaped has shaped the sound and structure of modern Akan gospel music.
Over the decades, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo produced several iconic gospel songs including Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, many of which remain staples in churches across Ghana.
The band started to collapse after facing significant challenges in early 2025 as a result of the tragic losses of its heroes and heroines.
As of the time of writing, Yaw Sarpong’s remains had been placed at the mortuary at Kumasi Emefa Hospital, where he was receiving medical treatment before joining his ancestors.
Currently, no funeral preparations or official dates have been made for Yaw Sarpong’s burial.
