In a significant crackdown on street crime, the Ho Circuit Court has sentenced three individuals to a combined 19 years in prison for their involvement in a coordinated robbery that took place in Ho, Ghana.
The convicts namely; Mercy Sokpe (22), Atsu Kamasa (25), and Godfred Dzidonu (19) were found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery itself.
The incident occurred on May 4, 2025, around 4:30 pm, when the three plotted to steal an iPhone 6s, valued at 700 Ghana Cedis, from 21-year-old Elijah Torgbedzi in the Ho central market area.
According to details presented in court, Mercy Sokpe approached the victim and requested to take a selfie using his phone.
During this seemingly innocent act, she signaled to her two accomplices, who then attacked the victim with scissors and fled with the phone.
Godfred Dzidonu was caught shortly after with the stolen phone and handed over to police.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Sokpe and Kamasa at their hideouts in Ho. On May 9, 2025, the trio appeared before the court and pleaded guilty to the charges.
Each of them received a three-year sentence for conspiracy to commit robbery, with Kamasa and Dzidonu receiving an additional five years each for the actual act of robbery.
Authorities are using this case to urge the public to remain alert and cautious, especially when approached by strangers in public areas.
