Asamoah Gyan slams Black Meteors after early exit from U-23 AFCON

Former Ghana national team captain Asamoah Gyan has expressed his dissatisfaction with Black Meteors players following their early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations U-23 tournament in Morocco.

Gyan who recently announced his retirement from professional football, took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the team’s performance.

In a tweet, Asamoah Gyan criticized the mindset and attitude of some players, suggesting they believed they were more important than the team as a whole.

He questioned if they had been carried away by the small fame and hype they received, saying that modern football is not just about what a player can do with the ball, but what they can do without it. 

Gyan also expressed disappointment that players were trying to play individually rather than working together as a team. He urged team to recognize the importance of defending and winning back when they lose the ball.

Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics were dashed after Black Meteor failed to deliver a decisive victory over Guinea in a must-win match in Tangier. The Guinean side proved to be a superior side, securing a 1-1 draw and advancing to the semi-finals alongside Group A leaders Morocco.

Both Ghana and Guinea started with three points, but Guinea maintained their lead on goal difference. Ghana needed a win to keep their Olympic dreams alive, but they knew they could go on with a draw.

Unfortunately, Ghana’s defensive efforts failed to keep their opponents at bay and ultimately cost them the game.

Despite their defensive struggles, Ghana initially took the lead thanks to talented striker Emmanuel Eboa, who capitalized on a series of defensive errors made by the Guinean side. Yeboah showed his skills with a great finish and gave Ghana a glimmer of hope. 

However, their defense continued to be weak, and Guinea’s Ibrahim Brezet scored a well-timed volley to level the score in the 60th minute, putting Ghana in a tight spot.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving Ghana disappointed and their Olympic dreams shattered. Black Meteors’ early tournament exit highlighted the need for self-reflection and improvement, both individually and collectively, to bounce back from this setback and regain a competitive edge in future competitions.
