A viral video circulating on social media has sparked a huge controversy after it showed hundreds of Burkinabe citizens protesting in France against Burkina Faso’s transitional president, Ibrahim Traoré.

The demonstration, which took place this month in the French city of Paris, has garnered worldwide attention and heated debates online.

In the footage, demonstrators can be seen flooding the streets, many wearing red ribbons tied around their foreheads, symbolizing resistance.

Protesters held placards and chanted slogans accusing Traoré of authoritarian leadership, demanding that he step down from power.

Although the specific reasons behind the protest is unclear, the unrest appears to stem from growing dissatisfaction with Traoré’s leadership style, which critics claim has veered toward autocracy since his rise to power.

Traoré, who came to power in 2022 through a military coup, has made headlines for his hardline stance against France, the country’s former colonial ruler.

In 2023, he ended Burkina Faso’s longstanding military accord with France, expelling French troops and asserting the nation’s right to self-defense.

The move was framed as an effort to reclaim sovereignty and combat Islamist insurgencies independently, particularly in the Sahel region, where extremist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have destabilized communities and displaced millions.

The president’s decision to cut ties with Paris and his shift toward non-democratic governance has drawn both praise and criticism.

Supporters argue that Traoré is standing up against neocolonial influence, while opponents accuse him of consolidating power at the expense of democratic principles.

Reports from VOA News suggested that Traoré also suspended a 2018 military agreement with France, giving French forces just one month to leave the country, a move seen by some as a bold assertion of national independence and by others as a risk to regional stability.

Reactions to the protests have been mixed online with some expressing their support for the demonstrators, while others accused them of advancing personal or foreign agendas rather than the interests of Burkina Faso.

As of now, President Ibrahim Traoré has not publicly responded to the protests in France demonstrated by the Burkina Faso nationals.
