Joseph Boahen Aidoo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has announced his resignation from his position after eight years in the post.

Hon. Boahen who was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017 issued a statement stepping down from the company on January 16, 2025.

According to a statement signed by the former Western Regional Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Amenfi East, his resignation took effect on January 7, 2025, citing a government directive to dissolve all boards of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) as the basis for his decision.

He emphasizes the importance of allowing stakeholders and business partners sufficient time to collaborate with the incoming leadership.

“While my renewed appointment under the COCOBOD Law, 1984 (PNDCL 81) was set to conclude in July 2025, I have chosen to step aside earlier to ensure a smooth transition and enable stakeholders and business partners to establish timely connections with the incoming head of the institution.

Shedding more light on his tenure, the outgoing CEO acknowledged the rewarding experience of steering COCOBOD and reaffirmed his commitment to the advancement of Ghana’s cocoa industry.

He also pledged his full support for any transition processes required to ensure continuity and progress within the sector.

“I remain committed to the advancement of Ghana’s cocoa sector and stand ready to support any transition processes that may be required. The experience of serving in this capacity has been both rewarding and enlightening, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to the development of our nation’s cocoa industry”.

He then expressed his appreciation to Akufo-Addo for providing him the opportunity to serve the firm because of his trust in him throughout the years.

“I wish to express my profound gratitude to former President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, and the good people of Ghana for granting me the rare privilege to serve our beloved nation as Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board for the past eight years. This opportunity has been an incredible honour, and I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me.

You may recall that in 2023, then-minority leader Cassiel Ato Forson sought Boahen’s immediate resignation for damaging COCOBOD and shortchanging farmers.

He believes that the cocoa sector has not been performing well and has had the lowest production in 15 years.

Dr Cassiel even expressed surprise after COCOBOD reported massive losses of 2.4 billion Cedis in a year following Joseph’s appointment to the sector in 2017.
