Former Ghanaian footballer Laryea Kingston asserts that Asamoah Gyan is unhappy over losing the Black Stars captaincy to Andre Ayew.
According to Kingston, Dede Ayew had took the captaincy “by force,” prompting Gyan to express dissatisfaction with the outcome.
Gyan served as Ghana’s captain for nearly five years but had his armband taken just before the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The national coach at that time was James Kwasi Appiah named Asamoah Gyan the captain-general but Dede Ayew took over as a new skipper.
Gyan initially retired as a result of this decision, but he later reversed it after President Akufo-Addo intervened.
Kingston criticised the national team’s management, accusing them of mistreating legends, with Gyan losing his captaincy being a notable example.
“Look at someone like Asamoah Gyan, Dede Ayew got the captaincy by force so if you are speaking to Asamoah now he is not happy,” he told Graphic Sport.
“Myself what they did to me for so many years I never supported the Black Stars but just recently I sat down and said it’s over let me focus.”
Meanwhile, then head coach Kwesi Appiah later defended his action, claiming that he handled it respectfully and thoughtfully, alerting Gyan of the change.
“I respect him a lot. That’s the reason why I called him to let him know the decision I was going to take and make him the general captain,” he said.
