Ohene Kwame Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, has reportedly been arrested in the Netherlands over allegations linked to an ongoing FBI-related fraud investigation.
According to reports, the Ghanaian lawmaker was detained by authorities at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam last weekend and is currently being held over his alleged connection to a suspected US$32 million international romance scam operation.
His arrest news was first disclosed by the Clerk to Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Djietror in a Facebook post shared on May 12.
“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has been detained at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,” the statement said.
It is believed that, the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House are currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain further details regarding the situation.
“The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter.
The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement added.
As of the time this report was published, no official charges had been publicly filed against Ohene Kwame Frimpong, and authorities have not disclosed the specific allegations or offences linked to his reported arrest.
Officials connected to the investigation, including the FBI, are yet to release an official statement on the matter as inquiries into the case remain ongoing following the Ghanaian lawmaker’s detention in the Netherlands.
Mr Frimpong is a Ghanaian entrepreneur and politician who won the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections, defeating incumbent MP Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.
He is a native of Agogo in the Ashanti Region and had his basic education at Cosmos Preparatory School in Lapaz, Accra. He later attended Aggrey Memorial A.M.E. Zion Senior High School for his secondary education.
The MP also studied at Central University before pursuing further studies at The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London in the United Kingdom.
