A shocking discovery has emerged as State Transport Corporation (STC) buses have reportedly been listed for sale on Alibaba, a global online marketplace.
The buses, manufactured in China by Zhongtong, are currently being sold for $14,000 to $15,000per unit on the e-commerce platform, complete with descriptions detailing their specifications.
The reason why STC buses, owned by the Ghanaian government, have appeared on Alibaba is known as of reporting this news.
However, the news has sparked a huge debate online with many Ghanaians questioning how state-owned transport assets could be listed for sale on an international platform.
This revelation comes at a time when Ghana’s transportation sector is facing operational and financial challenges, making the situation even more concerning for citizens who rely on STC services for intercity travel.
In June 2024, officials of STC announced plans to replace their aging buses with new fleets from China and Turkey.
The move was seen as part of efforts to modernize the country’s public transport system.
The announcement came after STC workers protested against the controversial appointment of a third deputy managing director within the corporation.
However, the sudden appearance of STC buses on Alibaba has raised concerns about whether these old buses are being sold off transparently or if there are underlying issues that the public is unaware of.
The selling of the state-owned STC buses on Alibaba has triggered mixed reactions from Ghanaians with many expressing anger and disappointment.
