Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, reaffirmed his commitment to restoring national sovereignty over the country’s natural resources in a forceful declaration that has quickly garnered support across Africa and beyond.

During a recent speech, Traoré rejected Western gold control, stating emphatically that Burkina Faso will mine its own gold to have an impact on the economy

“We will mine our gold ourselves—not for France, not for the West, but for our people!”

The statement is a turning point in Burkina Faso’s political and economic environment, as the government seeks to pivot away from foreign exploitation and towards national ownership of its huge gold reserves.

Burkina Faso is one of Africa’s leading gold producers, yet much of the earnings have historically gone to foreign multinational companies, especially those from the West.

Captain Traoré’s gold mining policy is a significant break from its trend, emphasising that Burkina Faso must benefit directly from its own wealth.

The decision is in line with a growing wave of pan-African consciousness and anti-imperialist sentiment across the continent, with government and citizens increasingly demanding that Africa’s huge natural resources benefit African countries first.

Under Traoré’s leadership, economic self-reliance and national dignity have become major issues.

The captain’s claim that Burkina Faso mine and manage its own gold aims not just to increase local revenues, but also to create jobs, develop native expertise, and reduce dependency on external powers.

The bold stance may inspire similar steps in neighbouring countries that are rich in resources but remain economically dependent on former colonial powers.

Traoré’s message is also a wake-up call to the youth of Burkina Faso and Africa as a whole. It promotes a sense of ownership, pride, and responsibility for determining the continent’s destiny.

At the same time, it sends a clear message to Western countries: Africa is willing to rethink its terms of engagement.
