Amasaman Circuit Court has sentenced an Indian businessman identified as Subham Sharma, who reportedly works as a manager for an Indian-owned air freshener company, to five years in prison after he was found guilty of possessing counterfeit Ghana cedi and U.S. dollar notes valued at GHS12,782,990.

The court delivered its ruling on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, following legal proceedings that established Sharmah’s involvement in the printing and possession of fake currency, an offense that violates Ghana’s financial and criminal laws.

Prosecutors told the court that the accused had produced large quantities of counterfeit banknotesthrough a printing press under false pretenses.

Investigations revealed that the fake currency included GHS 1,991,000 (one million, nine hundred ninety-one thousand Ghana cedis) and $991,000 (nine hundred ninety-one thousand United States dollars).

Authorities indicated that Sharmah allegedly printed the money and attempted to pass it off as legitimate company funds.

According to reports by renowned journalist, Kofi Adomah on Kofi Tv YouTube, the suspect had approached a printing press operator claiming he was an actor producing a movie and needed realistic prop money for filming.

After the notes were printed, he allegedly placed the counterfeit cash in a company safe to represent the cash holdings entrusted to him by his employer.

The scheme was uncovered after the money was later deposited at a bank, where officials discovered that the notes were counterfeit and alerted authorities.

During interrogation, Sharmah reportedly alleged that five Ghanaian colleagues had conspired with him. However, investigations by law enforcement agencies determined that the claims were unsubstantiated.

Prosecutors charged Sharmah with two criminal counts related to possession of counterfeit currency, offenses that could have resulted in a combined nine-year prison sentence.

The court, however, reduced the term to five years imprisonment, taking into account legal considerations related to his status as a foreign national.
