Iran’s Strait of Hormuz, also known as the ‘Strait of Ormuz,’ the world’s most vital ‘oil and shipping route, has reportedly been closed by its officials amid rising tensions with U.S.
According to reports, the Strait of Hormuz, which is Iranian state-owned territory and an oil checkpoint, was shut down on June 22, 2025, due to the country’s recent conflict with Israel.
The decision was made after a landslide vote in Parliament and came less than 24 hours after the United States fired bunker-busting bombs on three Iranian nuclear sites.
The Strait of Hormuz is an important waterway since it transports around 20% of the world’s oil every single day.
The Strait is a narrow channel that connects Oman and Iran, linking the Gulf to the north with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond.
It is 33km wide at its narrowest point, with the shipping lane only 3km wide.
If the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, there will be a greater scarcity of world oil supplies, which is likely to raise fuel prices for consumers, notably Americans, who rely heavily on the flow of oil.
According to a report from a local Iranian media outlets, the rationale for the Strait of Hormuz closure is that Iran officials want to defend its selves should the United States joins Israel’s war against Iran.
Although the parliament agreed to support shutting the Strait, the final decision rests with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
In response to this effort, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned against closing the Strait, disputing it will lure more rivals to Iran, escalating the global conflict.
“That would be a suicidal move on their part, because I think the whole world would come against them if they did that,” Rubio said in an interview with CBS’s Margaret Brennan.
As of now, Trump has not commented on the increased tensions following parliament’s ratification of Iran’s attempt to limit marine traffic which is still in its final stages.
