Popular American streamer and Internet sensation IShowSpeed has sparked controversy online after addressing questions about his African roots during his recent tour to Africa.
The YouTube star publicly spoke about his ancestry and cultural connections reigniting interest in whether he has Ghanaian or Biegerian heritage as fans across Ghana and Nigeria debating his background.
While live streaming on YouTube on his trip to Ghana, IShowSpeed declared that he is a Ghanaian, not a Nigerian, because his mother is from Ghana.
“I’m back home, my mother is actually a Ghanaian” – he stated excitedly when patrolling in Akropong township where he started his live broadcast there.
In addition to confirming his lineage, IShowSpeed born Darren Jason Watkins Jnr. was given a local Ghanaian name ‘Barima Kofi Akuffo’ by the elders of the Omanhene Traditional Council, and he was seen signing a citation at Chief Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III’s Palace.
IShowSpeed was spotted wrapped in white clothes at his waist while going through the rites performed by the elders before receiving the title.
Meanwhile, IShowSpeed landed in Ghana on Monday January 26, 2026 following his stop in Ivory Coast and Nigeria, a neighboring nations in West Africa.
He started his tour named “Speed Does Africa” on December 29th in a quest to learn about different African culture and traditions.
Among the other nations he tripped in during his African journey were Benin, Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola, and Eswatini.
During his tour in Ghana, Ishowspeed was recognised by a massive audience who received him at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
His travels to the country featured some live performances and cultural display at the Independent Square where high dignitaries including Cheddar also known as Kwame Bediako among others made their attendance.
He went to the Asenema waterfalls for traditional cleansing, where he was covered in white and resting on a bed while being massaged by women.
