Julius Malema, a South African politician and founder of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for unity among Africans as he condemned the artificial borders imposed by colonial powers.
In a recent speech, Malema criticizes the double standards of global powers, pointing out that European countries enjoy open borders yet continue to promote division access the African content.
“They don’t have borders in Europe, but when it comes to us, they say you must have borders… why?” he asked.
According to Malema, the fragmentation of Africa is no accident however it benefits Western powers.
“They thrive on the division of the African continent,” he stated. “Can you imagine the minerals of the DRC, combined with the minerals of South Africa, with a new currency based on those minerals?”

Julius Malema envisions a unified Africa with a mineral-backed currency that could challenge, or even collapse, the U.S. dollar and the British pound, which he noted is not backed by any substantial natural resources like gold.
“If we become a United States of Africa with our minerals alone, we can collapse the dollar,” he declared. “We collapse that strong pound that is, if it’s based on gold yet they don’t have a gold mine.”
He also called for the abolition of borders within Africa to allow for the free movement of people and goods, saying that such freedom would allow African nations to flourish.
“There were no borders, and we must all unite in that call,” Malema emphasized. “Free movement of persons, free movement of goods will make this continent flourish.”
The rationale behind Julius Malema’s message isn’t just political rhetoric but a strategic vision rooted in Pan-Africanism, a philosophy that has long called for the political, economic, and cultural unification of African nations.
Malema believes Africa can reclaim its economic independence and redefine its role in the global order by eliminating artificial divisions and harnessing the continent’s immense natural wealth.
He emphasizes that Africa’s wealth in gold, diamonds, cobalt, oil, and rare earth minerals has long been exploited by foreign powers while local populations remain impoverished.
“Why do we allow such things?” Malema questioned, challenging African leaders and citizens alike to rethink their allegiance to outdated colonial structures.
Malema’s appeal is particularly aimed at the youth of Africa, urging them to rise above tribal, ethnic, and national divisions to pursue a shared African identity and destiny.
His call for change includes; dismantling colonial borders, launching a mineral-backed African currency, enabling free trade and movement across nations, and investing in Pan-African education, infrastructure, and technology.
These ideas echo the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to create the largest single market in the world.
