The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) arrested Kofi Akpaloo, the leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Ghana’s anti-graft and security agency apprehended the aspiring president at his residence in Kumasi.
The reason for his arrest is unknown, however sources close to the development say the investigation is linked to a 2018 contract worth $1,919,750.82, allegedly issued to Mr. Akpaloo and his wife.
Details of the contract and the specific nature of the alleged irregularities remain unclear, but EOCO officials are said to be probing possible breaches related to financial transactions.
Kofi Akpaloo’s arrest and investigation come only weeks after the Ghanaian politician made a controversial statement about the Obuasi Helicopter crash which killed eight people last month.
Speaking on Wontumi Radio, he stated that the incident was a warning to politicians, including NDC members, whom he accused of misleading cocoa farmers.
According to him, the crash was a revenge for Mahama’s party for spreading falsehoods about cocoa export revenues to farmers, a claim that he strongly refutes.
“God is not asleep. You saw where the helicopter crashed? A cocoa farm. That’s no coincidence. It’s a message, don’t lie to cocoa farmers,” Akpaloo states.
As of now, EOCO has not filed any charges against Akpaloo since officials have not issued an official statement or communication to the public.
