The leader and presidential candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo has sparked controversy following comments he made regarding the recent Obuasi military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight personnel.
Speaking during an interview on Wontumi Radio, Akpaloo suggested that the tragic incident may have been a form of divine retribution.
According to him, the crash which occurred on a cocoa farm was symbolic, serving as a warning to politicians, particularly members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who he accused of deceiving cocoa farmers.
“God is not asleep. You saw where the helicopter crashed? A cocoa farm. That’s no coincidence. It’s a message, don’t lie to cocoa farmers,” Akpaloo stated.
He further claimed that some NDC officials had falsely assured farmers that cocoa export earnings had tripled within just half of the year 2025, a claim he strongly disputes.
To him, the crash was a form of punishment for what he described as “criminal acts in governance”.
His comments, especially where he remarked that “even children are dying, so what’s the big deal if old men like these die,” have drawn criticism on social media, with many calling them insensitive in the face of national mourning.
When asked if he was using the tragic incident to push political propaganda, Akpaloo stood by his remarks, insisting that what happened was simply “God dealing with wrongdoers.”
Despite his remarks stirring debate online, many Ghanaians continue to grieve the loss of the military personnel and are calling for unity and compassion rather than division during this difficult time.
