Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II has made a bold and provocative statement in response to a comment made by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in which the Asante king referred to Bono chiefs as his juniors.
The Dormaahene, known for his candour, has made it known that he does not see Otumfuo as more powerful than himself, sparking heated discussions within the two chieftaincy institutions.
In a recent public address, Dormaahene Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II asserts his autonomy and power, emphasising that his authority as a traditional leader is equal to that of the Asantehene, despite the latter’s historic status.
The Dormahene emphasises that Ghana’s chieftaincy system is constructed in such a way that each paramount chief has independence and sovereignty within their respective jurisdictions.
He highlighted the rich history of the Bono region, reminding the public that the Dormaa Kingdom has a longstanding heritage that predates the establishment of the Ashanti Kingdom.
He pointed out that the Dormaa state has played a pivotal role in the cultural and political landscape of Ghana, and its leaders have always maintained their independence and dignity.
The Dormaahene, who is also a High Court judge went further to explain how Otumfour used force to claim Obuasi, a gold mining town, despite being administered by the Bono traditional council and elders.

He also advised Asantehene to be cautious about how he communicates with his elders while addressing issues in public.
“I am telling every Ghanaian without contradiction that Otumfour is not more powerful than any other chieftaincy in the country. He owns the least amount of territory of any ruling chief in this era. Even all of the lands in the Ashanti Region do not belong to him, as many believe”.
“The stool is not valuable or more powerful than anyone, as many people believe. My authority in the Dormaa Kingdom is equal to his, and I will not allow anyone to undermine the Dormaahene’s role and power. So he [Otumfour] should be be mindful of his word when addressing matters in public” — he said
