The Recording Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason Jr. has shared what it takes to for an artist to win a Grammy Award.
According to him, winning a Grammy has nothing to do with the sales, streams, fans or artist’s fanbase but is strictly determined by the opinion of the membership and the quality of art.
Mason clarified that record labels cannot manipulate the process, debunking assumptions that it could be easily done to secure a win in the voting process before the award show.
He said: “First you have to understand that the only way to win a Grammy is to have the membership of the Academy vote for you. In order to be a member of the Academy, you have to be a professional, working in music in the United States.
Harvey Mason Jr continued — “Once you are a member of the Recording Academy, all the music gets submitted, the members listen to it and they evaluate it on the quality of the art”.
“Not the sales, not the streams, not how many fans, not how many followers but purely on the opinion of the membership in that particular year. That’s how you win a Grammy.
“There’s no committee, there’s no journalist, there’s no labels, its music professionals voting for their peers, period.”— He ended

Mason’s explanation follows concerns raised about the criteria for awarding artists, particularly in light of Nigerian musicians like Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, and Asake not winning despite nominations.
