Two Ghanaian police officers have been tragically shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in Binduri, a conflict-prone area in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region. The fatal incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, April 13, 2024, while the officers were traveling off-duty.
According to reports, the officers were not officially on duty at the time of the incident but were in the area as part of efforts to support peacekeeping operations amid ongoing unrest in the Bawku enclave.
The victims were reportedly traveling on a private motorbike from Bongo to Binduri, dressed in plain clothes, when they were ambushed and shot dead by the assailants.
The attackers are said to have fled the scene with the officers’ motorbike, leaving the victims lifeless along the route.
In an official statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, confirmed the incident.
She described it as a devastating loss to the service and assured the public that a full-scale investigation is underway.
The killing has raised more concerns about escalating violence in the Bawku area, which has seen repeated conflict and ethnic tensions in recent years.
The Ghana Police Service also extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers, praising them for their commitment to restoring peace and safety in volatile areas.
