Former Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Nixon Hamilton Biney, has officially announced his separation from his wife, Maame Afia Akoto, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The couple, whose union was seen as a rare political alliance, has ended their marriage after five years since tying the knot in 2020.
Chief Biney confirmed his divorce in a Facebook post on Thursday, February 13, 2025, with the heartfelt message saying;
“A man’s heart plans his ways, but God Almighty directs his steps. Where God guides, He provides. That journey 5 years ago has traditionally and officially ended successfully in JESUS’ name. God, I am grateful for this day. Thank you, Apostle Selasie Addae, Apostle Emmanuel Baidoo, and all for the support.”
His post suggests that the divorce process has been completed both traditionally and legally, marking the official end of their marriage.
He then went further to share a video of himself and his ex-wife finalising their divorce after being spotted holding schnapp, which had been handed to Afia Akoto’s family before to their wedding.
Chief Biney and Afia Akoto’s marriage had been in the spotlight due to their affiliations with rival political parties, the NDC and NPP.
Even though Chief Biney did not disclose the reasons for their separation, his statement suggests that divine guidance played a role in his decision.
It remains unclear whether personal, political, or other factors contributed to the breakdown of the marriage.
Meanwhile, Chief Biney and Afia Akoto’s marriage divorce process stemmed from 2023 after three years of exchanging vows.
Maame Akoto first addressed her breakup with Chief in front of NPP supporters at Okaikwei North Constituency where she contested as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general elections following the surfaced of leaked audio captured by GhanaWeb.
Following his announcement, many supporters and followers took to social media to express their support and well-wishes for both parties.
Some praised the former couple for handling the divorce with maturity and respect, while others speculated on the possible reasons behind the split.
