Wontumi FM, Asaase Radio, and 60 other Ghanaian media houses have had their stations shut down due to inability to renew their licences and other regulatory breaches.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) confirmed the closure of FM stations in an official announcement on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
According to the NCA’s statement, some of the stations do not have legal broadcasting authorisations or a certificate of compliance to begin operations.

It was also said that they will only be allowed to restart or continue working if they respect the laws and restrictions outlined in the letter, as well as Ghana’s constitutional rules.
As of now, only Wontumi FM and Asaase Radio have been officially cracked down, however there is a list of other Ghanaian broadcasters or Fm stations that are expected to join them.
Wontumi FM, founded by Chairman Wontumi was launched on February 9, 2022, while Asaase Radio, which is already closed, began operations nearly five years ago on June 14, 2000.
The CEO of Asaase Radio confirms the dissolution of the Accra-based radio station in a tweet, stating that “it is true” that it has been shut down due to a delayed license.
Yes, it’s true. Asaase Radio 99.5, which celebrates its 5th anniversary Saturday, has been shut down. The General Manager informs me it’s because the station delayed in renewing its licence last year. It was to be renewed by October but only done in December 2024.
