Yaw Asante Agyekum, who was wrongfully convicted as Ataa Ayi’s accomplice has revealed shocking details about his arrest after being released from prison.
In a recent interview with Nana Aba, Mr. Agyekum revealed that he was forced to walk bare-footed from Mpraeso to Nkawkaw, a distance of 13.1 km that equates to a walking time of 2 hours and 50 minutes by police.
He claims that the police conducted such action on him where they forced him through the mountains to Nkawkaw while they played reggae music.
Yaw Agyekum recounts how he was unfairly indicted, claiming that he was unexpectedly bumped by two police officers at his workplace, where he works as a mechanic.
He emphasises that, he was handcuffed after being interrogated by the officers regarding the whereabouts of Ataa Ayi, with whom he (Agyekum) had been working.
During the interview, he states that he had no idea Ataa Ayi, who is well-known for armed robbery, had been declared wanted by the police, despite having a close relationship and working with him.
He went further to state that after spending many years in prison, he will never forget the terrible incident and suffering he endured.
Yaw Asante Agyekum, who was jailed alongside Ataa Ayi in 2002, was acquitted on June 5, 2025, after serving a 23-year prison term for a crime he did not commit.
Ataa Ayi, a notorious armed robber who is currently in custody, was charged and sentenced to 90 years in prison for robbery and violent crimes in Accra and its vicinity.
Yaw recounts how the police made him walk on foot from Kwahu Mpraeso to Nkawkaw following his arrest in 2002.
