The Ministry of Roads and Highways has officially announced plans to reintroduce road and bridge tolls as part of the government’s strategy to generate revenue for road maintenance and infrastructure development.
According to statement issued by the ministry on Thursday February 6, 2025, the new approach will feature a technologically-driven toll collection system unlike the previous manual tolling system.
It was revealed in the statement that, the government’s move of reintroductions the new toll is to aim at improving efficiency, reducing congestion, and ensuring transparency.
The Ministry has assured the public that the system will be modern, automated, and user-friendly, addressing the challenges associated with the old tolling method.
To implement this initiative effectively, the Ministry has committed to a transparent, competitive, and cost-effective procurement process.
This will ensure that the best technology and service providers are selected to enhance toll collection while minimizing leakages and corruption.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways has emphasized its dedication to addressing road maintenance funding challenges through this initiative.
It has assured Ghanaians that the reintroduction of tolls will be done in a manner that benefits both road users and the country’s transportation infrastructure.
The timeline, toll rates, and specific locations as to when the road Tolls will be launched has not been made public however the ministry claim to communicate to the general public in due course as the government finalizes the modalities for the new system.
