Basintale, who previously served as the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) deputy communications officer for the Savannah Region, was named interim CEO of YEA on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Mahama chose Basintale for that post due to his strong advocacy for youth-oriented policies, and the president intends to continue focusing on youth empowerment and employment in Ghana.

Malik’s dedication and track record of championing youth concerns make him the ideal candidate to lead the YEA towards its goals.
His duty as CEO of The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is to combat youth unemployment in Ghana by establishing work opportunities, offering skill training, and encouraging entrepreneurship.
His focus on vocational training, entrepreneurship, and skill development should be adequate in order to provide young people with the tools they need to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
The agency has played an important role in tackling unemployment issues over the years, despite ongoing complaints about budget and implementation concerns.
Malik Basintale’s appointment has aroused excitement among many Ghanaians, who feel his leadership will revitalise and steer the organisation.
Youth unemployment is a major issue in Ghana, with thousands of graduates and young people unable to find meaningful work.
As Acting CEO, Basintale is also expected to spearhead efforts to reduce these figures by developing effective programmes and promoting public-private partnerships.
