The 2020 parliamentary candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress for Ayawaso West Wougon Constituency, John Dumelo has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to cancel the 2023 Ghana Independence Day celebrations.
The purpose of the annual National Independence Day celebration is to honour the bravery and spirit of the freedom fighters who fought for the nation’s independence.
The government announced that the 2023 Independence anniversary, themed “Our Unity; Our Strength; Our Purpose,” will be held in the Volta Region at the 50,000-capacity Ho Youth Resource Centre.
The 6th of March has also been declared a public holiday by the government to commemorate Ghana’s 66th anniversary of independence.
However, John Dumelo took to social media to ask President Akufo-Addo if the Ghana Independence Day celebrations could be cancelled due to the country’s current economic hardship.

According to him, if the president can truly find an alternative way to celebrate the anniversary, it will help save the expenses related with the annual celebration.
“Greetings @NAkufoAddo, respectfully we are in hard times, can you please cancel all state, regional and district Independence Day celebrations? You can do your usual “fellow Ghanaians” broadcast on tv. This will save us millions of cedis. Thanks so much” — he wrote.

Dumelo who ran for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate lost to Lydia Forson in 2022 elections.
Following family consultation and permission to run in the 2024 elections, he announced his intention to run for the second time.

Thank you all for the congratulatory messages. 2024 is a must win in Ayawaso West Wuogon. As parliamentary candidate in 2020, we closed the gap from 10,000 to under 1,900 through hard work. It’s time to take the seat. Let’s all get involved. #istilldey4u #2ndcoming pic.twitter.com/KUvEDzk8P6
