Doreen Tachei-Donkor, a Doctor of Optometry student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has made history as she become the first Ghanaian to correct successfully Accommodative Esotropia, also known in Ghana as “Alukumi” or “Anikyew,”
The 6th-year student at Kumasi’s renowned educational institution from Cape Coast was praised for helping a young boy in regaining his vision without surgery.
This rare eye alignment condition is whereby one or both eyes turn inward (strabismus) due to accommodation, was performed by Doreen who collaborated with other experts by the used of wet refraction and corrective lenses.

Doreen pursued her dream work at a young age. She grew up in Cape Coast and went to Fijai Secondary School in Takoradi, where she studied General Arts.
She continued her secondary school at KNUST in 2019, where she studied Eye Health & Visual Science Doctor of Optometry (OD) for six years before completing in 2025.
Doreen participated in a variety of activities while studying Optometry at KNUST and was chosen as the SRC Officer in 2023.
Her leadership role extended to the Optometry Students Association of Ghana (KNUST Chapter), where she was named the Head of three Publicity Teams and Vice President of the Binocular Vision Club.
Doreen represented Fijai Secondary School in the National Science and Maths Quiz during her high school years and was also named the best Female BECE Student in her region in 2017.
Due to her passion and capability to learn more in health care, she completed two-month optometry internships at Permeff Eye Care and the University of Cape Coast Hospital, Eye Unit in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
She also spent seven months working at the Ghana Police Service Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital to hone and polish her Optometry skills.
Aside from her Optometry work, Doreen has participated in basic life support trainings such as First Aid, Breast Cancer Awareness campaigns, and blood donations to students and those in need in the community.
As she rose to fame after her Accommodative Esotropia treatment on a kid caught national interest, many individuals urged the government to support Doreen’s special talents.
