Cecilia Dapaah, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, has stepped down from her position in light of the alleged theft of $1 million and other items from her home.
The news of the incident, involving two house helps, sparked outrage among Ghanaians on July 21.
Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Cecilia Dapaah tendered her resignation letter dated on July 22, expressing her decision to step down from her ministerial role.
In her letter, she clarified that the amount circulating on the internet does not accurately represent the true value presented in court regarding the stolen funds.
“Since yesterday, Friday, July 21, 2023, social and traditional media have been full of stories about a court case involving a theft that took place last year in the home I live with my husband and daughter.
“The stories sought to suggest that I own various huge sums of foreign currencies and millions of Ghana cedis which have been stolen from my home. Whereas I can state emphatically that those figures do not represent correctly what my husband and I reported to the Police, I am very much aware of the import of such stories around someone in my position — she said.
In explaining the rationale behind her resignation, Mrs Dapaah said “I am resigning therefore because I do not want this matter to become a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government at such a crucial time.”

Meanwhile, Cecilia Abena Dapaah embarked on her government career in 2001 as a special assistant to the President at that time, John Agyekum Kufour.
Her dedication and capabilities were evident, leading her to serve on the board of the Ghana Cocoa Processing Company.
Later, she earned the position of Deputy Minister for Water Resources, Works, and Housing in 2005, and her excellent performance resulted in her promotion to the substantive minister role in 2007.
Subsequently, in 2008, she decided to take her political ambitions to the next level and contested in the parliamentary elections in Bantama.
Her hard work and the support of the people propelled her to victory securing her position as a Member of Parliament.
She served with utmost dedication and integrity during her term, making a positive impact on her constituency and the nation as a whole.
